Huge requirements on control system availability and reliability

The E.ON UK Ltd, Kemsley cogeneration plant produces process steam and electricity for the nearby paper mills in Kent, with a total capacity of 80 MW of electricity and 300 t/h process steam. In addition, surplus electricity is supplied to the national grid.

The plant´s ten years of partnership with Metso started with a gas-fired CHP plant project in1995. Completely automated by Metso, the present CHP plant and a FBB plant built in 2002 operate 363 days per year with no seasonal variations in load pattern.

Metso´s delivery included the Damatic XDi distributed control system (DCS) for the controlling and monitoring of the CHP plant. The project also included a steam distribution and metering system to enable connection of the new CHP plant, existing packege boilers and new package boilers to each of the paper mills and enable metering of the steam supplies to each mill.
