Our environmental efficiency
Environmental footprint of our products and services
A relatively small portion of the environmental footprint of our products and services is created in our own production but are rather created in our value chain. As the volume of our production outsourced to our subcontractors increases, the relative significance of our own production further decreases.
The most essential environmental impacts of our production are related to energy consumption at our foundries. We constantly strive for improvements in our energy and materials efficiency and in reducing water consumption, emissions and the amount of waste in our own operations. We have also identified environmental risks related to our operations, and we practice precautionary procedures to prevent environmental accidents.
We have set Group-wide targets for energy-saving and CO2 emissions, as well as for water usage and the amount of waste going to landfill. We also have created a target for environmental accidents. Our target is zero environmental accidents.
The biggest share of the environmental footprint of our products is when in use, and therefore, we constantly focus on developing more eco-efficient technologies. The availability of the earth’s resources is already having a strong impact on our customer industries. With our technology, we are able to provide solutions for our customers to support their challenges.
The second biggest environmental impact is produced by our supply chain. Metso’s aim is to minimize environmental impacts throughout its value chain, so the significance of understanding and measuring the impacts in the value chain increases. Efforts are made to develop methods for calculating and understanding the environmental impacts of our supply chain.
