Management agenda

Strategic focus areas

In 2008-2012, Metso’s mining and construction businesses will continue to focus on fully exploiting the strong market demand.

In the paper and fiber businesses the focus will be on enhancing Metso’s presence close to its growing customer base in emerging markets and on a strong transformation to services business.

The energy and environment businesses offer interesting new growth opportunities based on Metso’s current know-how and technologies in the power, recycling and automation businesses, complemented by value-enhancing acquisitions.

Metso’s key value drivers

Metso focuses on accelerating profitable growth. To achieve this, the company focuses on three key value drivers: global presence, service business growth and environmental business.

  • Global presence

Metso designs its operations so as to best meet the needs of its customers. This involves decisions about where and how Metso operates. Global presence also refers to the influence Metso’s operations have in every geographical area – not only with respect to sales and service, but also to R&D, engineering, sourcing and manufacturing.

The success of Metso’s global operations is measured by the company’s ability to be the best choice for each of our customers, regardless of their geographical location. We grow our presence where our customers are growing. Metso exploits the growth potential especially in China, India, Brazil and Russia.
  • Service business growth

Metso has repositioned itself as a provider full-scope solutions and has expanded its service business from spare and wear parts business to maintenance agreement, and machine rebuilds, process optimizations and consulting.

As markets demand advanced integrated solutions and customers concentrate on their core business, Metso’s fast-growing base of new installations provides a platform for service growth.
  • Environmental business

Today, over 60 percent of Metso’s net sales can be classified as environmental business using the OECD definition. Our environmental know-how offering includes
  • Environmental performance analysis and information management services
  • Automation networks, systems, field control technology and life-cycle performance services
  • Energy-efficient processes and technology
  • Biofuel combustion and gasification technologies
  • Metal and construction material recycling technologies
  • Technologies for the use of recycled paper
  • Industrial water treatment technology and automation systems

Talent and competence development

The strategy of profitable growth as well as the transformation into a more service-oriented company will require new strategic initiatives and innovations. Metso will actively develop its HR policies and compensation systems to encourage its employees to actively participate in the strategy implementation and motivate them into pursuing the stretched targets.
