Retiring from Metso with a wealth of unforgettable encounters and experiences

Jeff McKay has had a remarkable career at Metso. Now, starting his retirement after a respectable 25 years in the company, he looks back at his career and shares some of his fond memories with us.

Jeff has been implementing advanced process control projects and improving the performance of mineral processing plants all around the world, all the while gaining the high trust and appreciation of his customers and colleagues. During his Metso career, he has significantly influenced the mining industry and the people around him, as noted by his colleagues.

Customer-centricity as the key to success

For Jeff, his work is all about the people. Over the years Jeff has developed a friendship and a partnership with nearly every client he has been cooperating with.

“I treat my clients as I would like to be treated. I approach new clients not as projects but as partnerships, and this is very well received. I don’t think we’ve ever had a client who wished to stop working with us,” Jeff says.

Jeff’s positive and customer-centric attitude has been noted by colleagues and customers alike. He has been widely praised by his customers for his ability to solve complex problems on several projects.

Factors contributing to Jeff’s long career

Jeff says that a continued sense of worth and accomplishment in his work has stemmed from improving plant performance on various sites and contributing to clients' success, which truly shows his customer-centric attitude.

“During these years, all my managers have been excellent. They have allowed me to have the freedom to develop the North and South American market and made sure that I have been always fairly compensated for my work,” he explains.

Jeff mentions another important aspect contributing to his long career: the continuous support of his loving wife. Because of this support, he has had the chance to go on longer projects abroad, see the world and visit nearly every continent during his projects.

Memorable moments over the years

During his career at Metso, Jeff's projects have taken him to many memorable and remote places around the world. He has been to places like Freeport Indonesia, which according to him resembles Pandora from the film Avatar with waterfalls and rugged cliffs, as well as to many beautiful locations in Western Australia, Europe, South America and Africa.

Jeff has found himself working at 4800m altitude in Chile, going to a game reserve in South Africa, seeing Michael Jackson when he came to visit Sun City in South Africa, and getting acquainted with the fauna in Australia’s outback.

Jeff fondly recalls working on his first project, which took place in the US, and which came together very quickly and was successful with a 5% increase in production. He also has many great memories of working together with his coworkers in France.

Fulfilling retirement ahead

During his retirement, Jeff is planning to spend quality time with his six grandkids, travel, do work around the house and the yard, ride his bike and attend more rock concerts, plays and sports games, to name a few.

“Working with Metso has been both rewarding and fulfilling. My work has taken me around the world and created a network of friends I will always cherish. I look forward to watching my colleagues continue their success at Metso while I move into the next phase of my life,” Jeff says.

On behalf of Metso, we are wishing Jeff a fulfilling, well-deserved retirement!
