METSO’S VALMET RECEIVES USD 115 MILLION WORTH OF ORDERS FROM CHINA

Metso Corporation's fiber and paper technology business area, Valmet, has received orders for two extensive papermaking lines and additional components to customers in China. The combined total value of the deliveries is approx. USD 115 million. The machines will produce high-quality printing paper grades and their start-ups are scheduled for late 2001 to late 2002.

The delivery to Jilin Shixian Paper Co., Ltd. comprises a complete papermaking line for the production of color offset newsprint, telephone book paper and SC-B printing paper. The main elements of the production line are wet end chemical handling and stock preparation systems, an OptiConcept paper machine, air systems, reel and winder. The automation and quality control systems will be delivered by Metso's automation and control technology business area, Neles Automation.

The Shixian paper machine, scheduled to start up in late 2002, will have a design capacity of 620 – 640 t/d. The ordered paper machine is the 6th OptiConcept paper machine from Valmet. The new machine will be located in Shixian, Tumen City, Jilin Province, in northeastern China.

The delivery to Shandong Chenming Paper Holdings Ltd. will consist mainly of stock preparation and wet end chemical handling systems, coating color preparation and supply, paper machine - Shouguang PM 2 - two winders and e.g. air systems. The machine control system will be delivered by Metso's automation and control technology business area.

The line's design capacity is 647 t/d max, of high-quality art base paper and high-quality LWC paper. The line will come on stream in May 2002, in the eastern coastal province of Shandong. This is a repeat order to the Shandong Chenming PM 1 started up in 1998.

The agreement with Wuhan Chenming Hanyang Paper Co. Ltd. complements to the paper machine, Wuhan PM 1, contracted from Valmet-Xian in July this year. The delivery is now extended to cover also a headbox, calender and a headbox control system. The paper machine, planned to start up in late 2001, will produce approx. 360 t/d of high-quality printing papers.

Metso's fiber and paper technology and automation and control technology units at Jyväskylä, Järvenpää, Turku, Tampere, Valkeakoski and Hollola in Finland will participate in the deliveries. Selected parts of the deliveries will be handled domestically by Valmet-Xian.
Metso's Valmet has received orders for 5 major production lines or machines from China this year. This year's startups include 6 new production lines or machines, together with half a dozen major rebuilds.
