Metso wins an order for the heat recovery steam generator for Vantaan Energia's new waste-to-energy plant

Metso Corporation's press release on July 5, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. local time

Metso will supply Vantaan Energia Ltd with a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) including main accessories, installation and commissioning. The boiler will be delivered by the Metso-Wärtsilä joint venture MW Power and it will be installed into a new waste-to-energy (WtE) plant in Långmossebergen in the city of Vantaa, Finland. Vantaan Energia plans to have the new plant completed in 2014 according to a preliminary schedule. The value of the order is nearly EUR 15 million and the order is included in Energy and Environmental Technology's Q2, 2011 orders received.

The heat recovery boiler MW Power is delivering will increase the overall efficiency of the power plant. The HRSG recovers the excess heat from the gas turbine's flue gases and its main role is to produce superheated steam for the steam turbine and low pressure auxiliary steam for the process as well as district heat. The heat recovery boiler uniquely not only produces its own steam but also superheats the steam from the two waste incinerators.

"Our new waste-to-energy plant will fulfil the most stringent environmental requirements and is a step towards carbon-neutral energy production. Through this investment, we will not only secure the production of district heat for our city but will provide efficient energy recovery from residual waste and offer a better waste management route than the current landfill disposal", says Pertti Laukkanen, Managing Director of Vantaan Energia. "MW Power's technically clever solution was also economically competitive. These arguments as well as earlier references were amongst those things that secured the deal for MW Power. We have cooperated with Metso since 1980's and have completed several successful boiler and automation deliveries with them."

With around 350 employees and turnover close to EUR 300 million, Vantaan Energia ranks amongst the top five energy companies in Finland. When in operation, the company's new WtE plant will provide electricity to national grid and district heating to Vantaa municipality area. The heat production will correspond to about half of Vantaa's annual heat requirement.

Technical information

In the Vantaa Energia's new plant the waste will consists of two combustion lines (with two independent grate boilers and associated systems such as flue gas cleaning) and an integrated gas turbineand heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and steam turbine.

In order to increase the overall efficiency of the power plant, live steam produced in the grate boilers will be superheated in the HRSG together with additional steam generated by the waste heat of gas turbine exhaust gases. The waste incinerators produce high pressure steam of 88 bar and 400 ºC. This steam is superheated in the HRSG to 535 ºC before it enters the steam turbine. The HRSG also has a medium pressure steam circuit at 40 bar and 400 ºC, which goes to the steam turbine and a low pressure steam circuit at 5,5bar, which produces auxiliary steam for the plant. The heat recovery boiler also includes a district heating economizer and a condensate reheater. The capacity of this boiler alone is about 56 MWth.
