Metso’s Process and Condition Test (PACT) Defines the State of Your Reel Operation

In an ideal world, the tissue machine is running well, the reel is winding proper diameter, defect free parent rolls and there is enough capacity in the off-machine processes so that all production from the paper machine gets through the line and is shipped to the happy customer.

Unfortunately, mill life isn’t always this sunny. Web breaks, grade changes and other disturbances always come along to help decrease material efficiency. On average, 7 minutes of lost production is accumulated with each lost turn-up or thread-up following a sheet break due to the amount of paper that must be skinned around each bad turn-up or sheet break. If you can optimize the reel and threading to reduce your total daily amount of breaks or missed turn-ups by just (4), you will save about 1/2 hour downtime, which translates to 2% more production per day.

A defective reel can cause considerable economic loss due to web breaks, bottom waste, poor roll structure and unplanned shutdowns. A properly functioning reel is necessary for good tissue roll quality and for keeping reel broke to an absolute minimum. Reels operate under high mechanical stress; therefore they should be tested every year to ensure trouble-free reliable operation.

Arranging a Tissue Reel PACT by Metso is an ideal way to ascertain the current operating condition of your reel and to determine what service operations are needed for the next scheduled shutdown or the scope of the reel reconditioning needs.

A Reel PACT includes an examination of reel loading pressures, mechanical condition, an analysis of reeling parameters, reel turn-up surveillance and inspection, controls inspection and tissue roll structure measurements.

The Reel PACT will provide information on all reel functions, the reel nip loading system, the structure of the tissue roll being produced, and the state of reel alignment.

During the analyses conducted by Metso’s service professionals, the mill will be made aware of all adjustment and maintenance needs. An oral report on the major deficiencies observed and the recommended solutions will be given at the end of the test. Adjustment and/or servicing will be done during the test when possible within the time frame allowed and with the crew scheduled for the test. Mill cooperation will also be required in this respect.

Extended Reel PACT options available to the standard Reel PACT include; alignment measurements, vibration measurements, analysis of the reel turn-up, web threading analysis and CD profile analysis.

Acting on the results of Metso’s Reel Process and Condition Test will help you minimize bottom and top waste, will improve runnability and product quality and help your mill upgrade daily reel maintenance and operation.
