The business units take care of subcontractor and supplier relations in their local communities and business environment. Joint principles are generally only applied in cases of disseminating environmental knowledge and monitoring the management of environmental matters. In 2002 Metso's general terms of purchase were supplemented by a requirement that suppliers operate in an ethically and ecologically sustainable manner.

The networks in research and development are covered earlier in this report, in the chapter on technological competence development. Networking is a way to enhance competence within technology development. A similar need for strong cooperation with business partners has been recognized in information and communications technology (ICT).
