Environmental Charters and Voluntary Initiatives

Metso Corporation has signed the Business Charter for Sustainable Development drawn up by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and has undertaken to comply with its Principles of Environmental Management. The Charter contains sixteen Principles of Environmental Management which, from the business point of view, are essential to sustainable development. The objective of the Business Charter for Sustainable Development is to encourage enterprises to improve their environmental performance in accordance with the sixteen principles, promote this development in their management practices, evaluate their progress and report it in the appropriate manner. The principles of the Charter complement Metso’s own environmental policy.

The EU has completed its Best Available Technologies (BAT) document for the pulp and paper industry based on the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) directive. The objective of the IPPC directive is to improve the level of environmental protection by taking into consideration the combined impacts of different emissions. Metso contributed to and had a significant role in this development process.
