Reducing water consumption and effluent loads
Paper and pulp making are water intensive processes and therefore the eco-efficient use of water is in our customers' best interests. Metso Paper has developed environmental technology solutions which reduce water consumption and the amount of detrimental substances it contains, and enables water to be recycled.
The increased use of recycled fibers and mechanical pulps as raw materials in paper production also increases the amount of detrimental substances in process water circulation. The economic cost of these substances is significant both to the paper mill and in the after-treatment of the products. Previously the only method for removing colloidal impurities was to rinse them out with wastewater.
Ultrafiltration contributes to more eco-efficient operations. All solid, colloidal and bacterial material is separated from the water. The main applications of the CR ultrafiltration system are in the recovery of coating and filler agents, water recycling and improvement in runnability through the cleaning of white water.
During the coating process, ultrafiltration recovers coating chemicals from the wastewater, which arise from the production of coating color, and returns them back into production. The recovery reduces chemical use and the amount of waste in both paper production and the wastewater load. Moreover, the efficiency of the wastewater treatment plant is increased.
Due to its small space requirements and operational reliability, the FlooBed bioreactor system can be used for the biological treatment of both wastewater and process white water. The bioreactor process can replace a traditional biological wastewater treatment plant; it can also be installed as a pre-treatment stage in existing treatment plants to increase capacity. Compared to traditional solutions, the FlooBed moving bed biofilm process is both compact and easy to operate.
