Pipeline pump stations

Pipelines already crisscross the globe and many more miles of pipeline will be built in the coming years to help satisfy a steadily growing demand for energy worldwide. Whether you are transferring Natural Gas or Crude, meeting delivery obligations is easier said than done. Partners who bring technical expertise and a track record of success can make the difference between profit and loss.

Protecting critical assets and perpetual flow

Valves in pumping stations play a critical role in protecting high-cost and operational-critical assets, including prime movers, pumps and control and measurement systems. Valve failure will most certainly cause a process shutdown and could potentially result in the destruction of critical infrastructure. More critically, valve failure could result in dangerous conditions or environmental contamination.

As differential pressure is inherent to the pumping station process, noise, vibration and cavitation will be persistent challenges that need to be overcome. Noise must be mitigated in order to comply with industry regulations, especially when pumping stations are close to a population center. Vibration created by aerodynamic noise can stress surrounding infrastructure including pumps and the pipe itself.

Every control valve in pipeline service, whether it be crude or gas, must fight a never-ending battle against media impurities. Clogging is a challenge with two potential outcomes, neither of which are acceptable. The first is friction and wear on the valve that could cause it to jam. The second is buildup can affect controllability, hindering the valve’s performance causing reduced station efficiency and prompting an unscheduled maintenance.

Q-Trim from Metso: Self-cleaning and noise attenuating valve technology

The patented Q-Trim technology from Metso stages the downstream pressure drop to ensure that the highest pressure in line stays below the vapor point. The result is that noise can be reduced by up to 30 dB, limiting vibration stresses on surrounding infrastructure and helping achieve compliance with noise regulations.

Q-Trim also includes self-cleaning valve trim to prevent buildup of media impurities in the valve. This feature improves safety by ensuring valves will operate reliably. Our self-cleaning valves can also remain in service for longer than competitive valves, saving customers large sums in maintenance and valve inventory costs.

The noise attenuation and self-cleaning benefits of Q-trim make process operation safer and more predictably reliable. Ultimately these features and cycle-life advantages make the Total Cost of Ownership of these valves increasingly attractive as saving amortize and compound over time.

Increasing throughput, efficiency and uptime

Metso valves with Q-Trim help our customers to create safer working conditions while solving critical process challenges. The result is increased efficiency and uptime that translates into revenue growth.

  • Safer: The dangers associated with clogging and noise are reduced
  • Protect safety- and operation-critical infrastructure
  • Comply with industry regulations and noise ordinance
