Blog: Take digital steps towards preventive maintenance

Managing a modern aggregate plant or fleet of mobile crushing equipment can seem like a daunting task. With equipment moving between sites, often in remote areas, getting a handle on all the moving parts in order to get the most out of your crushing and screening assets means getting ahead of the curve in terms of your maintenance planning.

One important thing to consider when looking at your maintenance is whether you are operating on a proactive (preventive) or corrective basis. Corrective maintenance has been shown to be many times over as costly as preventive maintenance. The reason being is that when assets fail in the field, production is often interrupted, resulting in costly downtime. Parts may not be readily available or on order causing further delays. Repair staff may not be available immediately or even allocated to other sites.

All of these factors point to a preventive approach to maintenance as being the less costly alternative if done properly.  Easy to say but often not easily done. Taking a true preventive approach to your maintenance planning means looking closely at three critical factors.  Without these elements working together smoothly, any preventive maintenance program will eventually run into difficulties.

1)      Having access to the right information at the right time to make decisions.

2)      Timely scheduling of service events and parts change-outs.

3)      Proper notifications, documentation and reporting.

At CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017, Metso will be launching Metso Metrics Services, a new digital remote equipment condition monitoring solution that helps give you critical insights on your fleets performance and maintenance needs. Backed by Metso and our partner’s expertise, Metso Metrics Services helps clients to step away from costly corrective maintenance and make the move towards taking a more proactive approach. With a built in digital log book, individual maintenance plans built into the system and access to optional troubleshooting and advice customers gain visibility on their equipment to help them take the next step towards having a true preventive maintenance program.
