Performing together is one of Metso’s most important areas of interest organization wide. This is because it concerns several people-related issues, such as safety, community development and human rights. Metso makes sure that its employees are guaranteed proper working conditions and safe facilities for everyday operations. In order to stay up-to-date on the actual progress at different locations, a key safety indicator LTIF (lost-time incident frequency) is calculated each day, month and a year. Metso’s LTIF in 2016 was 2.4, compared to 2.7 in 2015 and the ultimate goal is to reduce LTIF to less than one.
Building customer success for Metso means offering safe and sustainable solutions to any challenge their customers are facing. As sustainability is a major trend that is not going to fade away anytime soon, having the environment and people in mind is always the best starting point for any process. This is why Metso is putting a lot of effort in innovating more efficient products and services to reduce customer’s costs, improve plant availability, safety and productivity while minimizing the environmental effects. For example, Metso valves are designed to endure a wide scale of hazardous conditions and material flows as well as unexpected interruptions.
What comes to the responsible supply chain, global networks and different operators in the field may be hard to control. However, Metso has taken this challenge under its radar and wants to ensure responsible and transparent operations all over the world. The concrete actions that have been made are the risk mapping of suppliers and extensive third-party supplier audits. These audits were started in 2015 and solely in China and India up to fifteen third-party audits were conducted in 2016. In the year 2017, several audits are still continuing in China and India, and also in Turkey and Brazil.
Based on the audits, suppliers were given a time limit to take corrective action upon safety, human rights, environment and risk management issues when need. Furthermore, Metso is also paying attention to its internal operations and thus, conducting internal sustainability audits and giving sustainability trainings for its procurement and quality staff in several countries.
Having company’s own sustainability goals for its internal operations has made a real, concrete impact. The water consumption has been reduced by 2.8%, with the help of a new water audit tool and water-saving actions. The target for the future is to do even better, and reduce the water consumption by 15% until 2020. The share of landfill waste was reduced to 60% because of new and more efficient waste processing and waste audit tool. The energy saving actions of 11,9% less energy used, have translated into reduced CO2 emissions by 15,900 tCO2. The goal for 2020 is to reduce emissions by 20% from the current state.
On an individual level as a Metso employee I also want to do my share for the sustainability targets. I believe that it all starts from tiny small things like turning off the light when leaving a room, all the way to using public transport, recyclable water bottles through the day, and respecting one another at work. We are all encouraged to report any safety risk at Metso facilities to our supervisors, as well as study the renewed code of conduct carefully and do the mandatory training.
