Our global research and technology development network actively develops new technologies, products and service solutions to meet our customers' needs.
Metso’s global research and technology development network includes approximately 20 locations around the world. A significant number of our research and development work is carried out in a collaboration with a network of customers, research institutions, universities and other partners.
Our research and development expenses in 2016 totaled EUR 34 million, i.e. 1.3 percent of sales (2015: EUR 33 million or 1.1%). During 2016 our research and technology development network made 91 invention disclosures resulting in 15 priority patent applications. As of the end of 2016, Metso had 283 inventions that were protected by patents.
All new research and development projects have sustainability targets
According to our sustainability strategy, each of Metso’s new research and development projects launched starting 2016 has to set sustainability targets, concerning environmental efficiency and/or product safety innovation. Once these research and development projects are closed, targets will be verified. This is also one way to further develop our responsiveness on customer expectations and fulfilling their needs. Working together to re-invent the way our customer industries use resources, control emissions and use their surroundings is a joint effort for us and our customers.
Metso has a new R&D sustainability metrics for R&D projects. Sustainability targets can be divided to environmental and safety targets. Environmental targets have three categories: efficiency targets, emission targets and materials efficiency targets. One project may have targets from several different categories.
