Research and development

Our global research and technology development network actively develops new technologies, products and service solutions to meet our customers’ needs.

Our R&D network includes approximately 20 locations around the world. We accelerate development work and innovations through digitalization, with a focus on practical and concrete outcomes for the industries we serve. A significant amount of our research and development work is carried out in collaboration with a network of customers, research institutions, universities and other partners. Our ambition is to maintain our technology leadership with cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable products, solutions and services that meet our customers’ needs.

According to Metso’s sustainability strategy, every new R&D project launched since 2016 has to set targets concerning environmental efficiency and/or product safety innovation. Once the research and development projects are closed, targets will be verified. This is also one way to further develop our responsiveness to customer expectations. Re-inventing the way our customer industries use resources and their surroundings and control their emissions is a joint effort for us and our customers.

Our research and development expenses in 2017 totaled EUR 27 million, i.e. 1.0 percent of sales (2016: EUR 34 million or 1.3%). Our research and technology development network made 69 invention disclosures in 2017, resulting in 18 priority patent applications. At the end of 2017 Metso had 300 inventions that were protected by patents.

In 2017, 74 percent of Metso's research and development projects had environmental targets and 49 percent had safety targets.
