A circular economy is about minimizing waste and making the most of the scarce resources on our planet. We can minimize the resources needed, waste, emissions, and energy consumption through long-lasting design, maintenance, repair, reuse, remanufacturing, refurbishing, and recycling.
Circular economy in Metso's value chain

For our customer industries, there is a growing demand to do things in a more environmentally efficient way. We need raw materials to maintain our modern way of life, but the increasing scarcity of resources and climate change are bringing new challenges and forcing industries and societies to be more efficient. Many types of materials and waste can also be reused after the appropriate processing. Developing energy-efficient and cost-effective processes for refining different waste streams is a big business opportunity in the coming years.

 

Our role in the circular economy

In our customers’ value chain, Metso is part of the processing of natural resources into a form that allows them to be used as a component for the elements of modern life, such as computers, mobile phones, infrastructure and buildings. Once these products and materials are at the end of their life cycle, Metso’s solutions address the recycling of metals, waste and building materials.

Circularity along the whole value chain

The circular economy starts with product design and ends with extending the life cycle of the customer equipment and operations, and taking some valuable materials back into our production. We continue to seek new solutions to narrow and close the material and energy loops both in our own and our customer’s operations. This is the only way to go!

PRODUCT DESIGN

We aim to design our products to be sustainable. In 2018, 86% of our R&D projects had set sustainability targets and our goal is for 100% of our R&D projects to have sustainability targets by 2021. Our R&D projects have sustainability targets that are related to e.g. environmental efficiency, including energy and water savings, waste, materials efficiency, reduction of CO2 emissions, and safety.

SOURCING

Our products are built to last, and service and environmental aspects are important parts of the product development process. As an example, we buy scrap metal for our production. We use of a lot of recycled metals and steel in our production.

MANUFACTURING

We aim to minimize the amount of waste and increase the recycling and reuse of materials at all our locations. We are also looking into replacing plastic and wood with renewable packaging materials. Metso is committed to the packaging pledge of the Technology Industries of Finland, which aims to reduce the plastic waste from packaging materials.

LOGISTICS

For Metso, it is important to consider the load occupancy rate and efficient planning of transportation routes. Our current goal is to reduce 20% of our logistics routes by 2025.

MARKETING & SALES

We also lease and resell our products, e.g. Lokotracks.

LIFE CYCLE SERVICES (LCS)

Through LCS, Metso promotes circular economy by optimizing product usage through servics, repairs, wear and spare parts, and performance solutions. When products are taken care of and optimized, their life cycle is lengthened and their performance is improved.

WEAR & SPARE PARTS

Our wear parts also promote the circular economy by lengthening the life cycle of our products. By optimizing wear parts and renewing machinery or parts of it, the life cycle and the durability of the products can be improved.

REPAIR & FIELD SERVICE

Servicing improves the durability and life span of the products. Repair and field service focuses on improving the efficiency and the safety of the products. Keeping products in use for a longer time also promotes the circular economy.

REFURBISHMENTS & REBUILDS

Proper maintenance and rebuilds can reduce the signs of aging to ensure that production goals are met; this lengthens the life cycle of the products and promotes the circular economy.

PERFORMANCE SOLUTIONS

Performance solutions are dedicated to delivering and sustaining performance improvements and measurable business results. This is important for the circular economy: without performance improvements, older products might be replaced with newer products at a faster pace.

Metso Tailings Management

A new product launch, Metso Tailings Management, is bringing change through the dewatering, handling and reprocessing of tailings.  Metso Tailings Management advances the circular economy by removing the water from the tailings, after which the water can be recycled and the tailings dry stacked.

Process optimization services

Optimizing processes reduces energy consumption and significantly lengthens the life cycle of products, which contributes to circular economy. For example, Hunchun Zijin Mining improved their efficiency by 18% through process optimization. 

Lokotrack® Urban™

Today, the demolition waste from the majority of construction demolition sites is hauled by road truck to distant crushing sites. Metso’s unique Lokotrack® Urban™ Series mobile jaw crushers reduce dust, cut noise emissions by up to 60%, which can help in getting crushing permits closer to cities, urban environments and other populated areas, and reduce truck traffic. The Lokotrack mobile solutions are also suitable for asphalt recycling, which contributes to a more circular economy.
