Codelco Gabriela Mistral Division successfully upgrades cathode stripping machines with support from Metso Outotec

The project was executed over a period of more than 6,000 hours without accidents due to the safety leadership of both companies.

After 15 years of operation, Codelco's Gabriela Mistral Division (DGM) aligned with its sustainable objectives and without expanding its footprint, decided to modernize its two cathode stripping machines. The upgrade work was comprised of the assessment and recommendation work, the supply of components as well as related services by Metso Outotec. The service work included the installation, commissioning, and start-up of the Chiseling (knife unit), Down Ender (downer unit), DDU (deflector unit), and Rejected Unit.

The project began in August 2022, with the modernization of the first Cathode stripping machine, an initiative successfully led by the Gabriela Mistral staff and Corporate Maintenance Management with the support of local and global specialists from Metso Outotec, after more than six months of planning and technical discussions. During the pre-work period, Gabriela Mistral specialists together with Metso Outotec experts reviewed and verified the condition of the units that were being replaced as well as the site conditions, to define and coordinate the requirements needed to start the service work. In parallel, the division's maintenance area conducted a hazardous operations workshop to identify all operational risks associated with the upgrade, to be able to properly understand potential issues.

We at DGM appreciate the professionalism, commitment, and technical capacity provided by the Metso Outotec team.
Nelson Escobar, Superintendent of Gravels and Wet Area Maintenance of the Division

Capitalizing on the knowledge acquired while assessing the first machine, the second cathode stripping unit is now scheduled for modernization in 2023. Nelson Escobar, Superintendent of Gravels and Wet Area Maintenance of the Division, emphasizes: “The collaborative and flexible work between Codelco and Metso Outotec staff members helped to adapt to the challenges and achieve the execution of the project in the allocated time while delivering on the safety and quality targets. This allowed us to meet the production commitments for the operation in several days after the upgrade work was completed. We at DGM appreciate the professionalism, commitment, and technical capacity provided by the Metso Outotec team".

Rodrigo Johnson, Operations Manager Beneficiation, Dewatering and Hydrometallurgy of Metso Outotec Field Services says: "Originally we programmed the service planning for seven days of execution plus three days for start-up, but thanks to the experience, support, leadership, and commitment of Codelco, we were able to optimize this in two days, reaching more than 6,000 HH of project execution without accidents".
