Decarbonization of iron and steel industry is progressing and there is a crucial need for breakthrough technologies. One solution is to reduce iron ores by hydrogen and melt produced Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF).

This is a known solution for good quality iron ores (DRI- grade), but what about high gangue (blast furnace (BF) grade) content ores which are problematic for EAF’s? Metso Outotec DRI Smelting Furnace is our key technology for utilization of BF- grade iron ores in the future.

Timo Haimi

Mr. Haimi has a Master’s Degree from the department of process metallurgy of the University of Oulu, Finland and +15 years of experience in the steel and ferroalloys industry. Mr. Haimi has in-depth understanding of the overall metallurgical plant design and has been guiding the work of the other disciplines in the various studies, proposals and projects implementation. In the past Mr. Haimi has worked in steel plants and as a commissioning manager for various ferroalloys projects. Recently Mr. Haimi has worked as a Smelting Manager in Shanghai office in China and is currently working as a Senior Sales Manager for Smelting.

Kimmo Vallo

Product Manager, DRI Smelting Furnace

Mr. Vallo has +20 years of experience in the steel and ferroalloys industry specializing in production development. Steel plant experience is from stainless steel plant Outokumpu from various positions from laboratory manager through steel plant development to steel plant / ferrochromium plant investment projects. Mr. Vallo currently works as a Product Manager, DRI Smelting Furnace, with responsibilities in productizing the Metso Outotec DRI smelting solution, with special interest in integrating the smelting furnace with Circored.
