How others have improved profitability and reduced risks?
Vertical shaft impact (VSI) crushers are generally used in the last phase of the crushing circuit. Due to their ability to produce precisely shaped end products, VSI crushers are most popular among aggregates producers, construction industry and recycling applications. In mining operations, they are utilized in preparing the material feed for grinding.

Original Barmac® B Series™ vertical shaft impact (VSI) crushers
Barmac® vertical shaft impact (VSI) crushers were the first vertical shaft impactors in the world. The original Barmac® VSI crusher was developed in New Zealand over 40 years ago after which the VSI crushers have spread to thousands of crushing sites around the globe.
Barmac® VSI crushers have evolved immensely over the years, but their trademark is still the same – accurately shaped end products.
High-quality end products
The secret behind Barmac® B Series™ VSI crushers’ efficiency is the unique crushing process. While most other crushers reduce rocks by pushing them by force against metal, Barmac® B Series™ VSI crushers also use the rock fed into the machine to crush itself.
This autogenous crushing action results in lower cost per ton than any other impact crushing method. Furthermore, rock-on-rock crushing has proven to produce end products that have precise and homogenous shape.
In addition to traditional rock-on-rock crushing, Barmac® B Series™ VSI crushers can nowadays also be equipped with metallic anvils on request. In this case the rock-on-rock cavity ring is replaced with an anvil ring, and the rocks are slung against metal anvils instead of a rock bed. The anvil solution improves reduction ratio and enables finer end products, but the downside is slightly higher wear costs because the anvils must be replaced from time to time.
Barmac® B Series™ VSI crushers accept fines in the feed and allow user to finetune crusher’s performance by changing the rotor speed or cascade ratio. Due to these features and precise reduction, Barmac® VSI crushers are especially useful for producers who are after cubical end products used for example in concrete, asphalt and in groundwork materials.
Moreover, the accurate shaping capabilities have proven worthy in manufactured sand, heap leaching, pre-grinding, industrial minerals, and recycling applications.
- End products with superior cubical shape
- Accepts fine feed material
In Barmac® B Series™ VSI crushers the primary path for feed material is through the rotor where it can be accelerated up to 80 m/s (262 ft/s) before being discharged into the crushing chamber. Additionally, material may be cascaded into the crushing chamber, bypassing the rotor.
The cascade feature enables the operator to optimize the capacity and power consumption and to manipulate the product grading and shape to meet the specification requirements.
- Ability to control product grading
- Fine-tune product with cascading
Easy to install and maintain
Barmac® B Series™ VSI crushers are designed to prolong the lifetime of wear parts and increase the operational availability by reducing the time needed for parts changes.
Service time is drastically reduced with quick access to the rotor parts via an inspection door. The roof lifter and rotor service arm eliminate the need for an external crane in regular maintenance which simplify servicing the internal workings and speed up rotor changes.
- Low wear costs due to rock-on-rock crushing
- Metso parts for trouble-free operation
Simple and reliable automatic lubrication handles the daily greasing of the main shaft, and Metso IC™ crusher automation ensures safe operation and condition monitoring from distance.
- Multiple features for safer operations and maintenance

Applications for VSI crushers
Selecting and applying Barmac® B Series™ VSI crushers
Selecting and applying a Barmac® VSI crusher correctly requires understanding the economic and application-specific factors. The desired production volumes define the optimal size of the crusher. Rock-on-rock or anvil crushing, on the other hand, results in slightly different end products than normal tertiary and quaternary compression type crushing.
Barmac® VSI crushers produce cubical aggregate that performs well in concrete, asphalt and base mixtures. It can also be considered for fine crushing, particularly for abrasive materials, as it is not mechanically restricted in the same way as compression crushers are at fine settings.
If applied correctly, rock-on-rock crushing offers the lowest wear cost per tonne of any impact crushing method. In most cases, Barmac® VSI crushers are applied in the last crushing phase of any crushing circuit. It is at this stage of the process where the crushing of the final products is performed, be it the production of superior shaped aggregates, manufactured sand, mill feeds, or liberation or separation of a particular mineral from its host rock.
Different quarries often utilize Barmac® B Series™ VSI crushers since they can produce high quality cubical shaped aggregates that meet all major construction specifications. Barmac® VSI crushers are particularly successful in producing road-base, top dressing chip, concrete and asphalt aggregates. In these applications, Barmac® VSI crushers can be operated either in open or closed circuit, depending on the types of aggregates and the specifications required.
Manufactured sand production
Accurate shaping capabilities and acceptance of fines make Barmac® B Series™ VSI crushers excellent for manufactured sand production. Rock-on-rock crushing ensure low operating costs, and whenever more reduction is needed, or the feed is coarse, the crusher can be equipped with metallic anvils. Barmac® VSI crushers’ speed is adjustable, so they can also produce very fine end products if required.
Industrial minerals production
With features such as controlled product grading, preferential crushing, low production costs and ability to produce finely graded products, Barmac® VSI crushers can optimize the performance of most industrial mineral processing installations.
In this sector, Barmac® VSI crushers are popular as cost-effective fine crushing equipment for the abrasive materials.
For example, the diamond mines have noticed that utilizing Barmac® VSI crushers simplifies the liberation of diamonds from gangue minerals. In addition, fine crushing cement clinker with Barmac® VSI crushers is gaining popularity since VSI crushers have proven their ability as cost-effective pre-grinders.
Metallic minerals production
In mining metallic minerals, Barmac® VSI crushers with high capacity and ability to produce finely graded products such as mill feed, sinter feed or material for heap leach operations, are ideal machines that can replace high-cost, inefficient crushing and milling equipment.
Adding Barmac® VSI crusher to an existing circuit can save considerably if a plant is looking for increasing production without replacing existing production equipment in a milling circuit.
Barmac® VSI crushers can outperform many other equipment in recycling applications. These recycled materials can be waste aggregates or demolition waste, slags, or even glass and other waste products that can be processed and sold.
Mobile and portable applications
Barmac® B Series™ VSI crushers are also available as mobile and portable versions, which opens up a new range of business opportunities for contractors, quarry operators, recycling and mining applications. In addition to easier mobility, portable and mobile Barmac® B Series™ VSI crushers have advantages such as flexible process adjustability, less material transport required, less manpower needs, and compliance with strict environmental standards.
