Stirred mills are used for wet grinding. Ideal for grinding finer products, stirred mills are known for operational efficiency and smaller required floor space. Metso offers both gravity-induced and fluidized technologies in Vertimill® and Stirred Media Detritors (SMD), allowing for the optimum equipment solution for your circuit.

Stirred mills for more efficient operation

The stirred milling technologies can be divided into two sub-categories: gravity-induced stirred mills and fluidized stirred mills.

Gravity-induced stirred mills initiate a ball charge motion via rotational movement of a screw to provide a size reduction mechanism. In contrast, fluidized stirred mills use a rotational movement to fluidize a media-slurry mixture, resulting in size reduction.

The type of mill and the circuit configuration are intrinsic to maximizing the grade and recovery profile of an ore.  

Metso offers both stirred milling technologies.

Vertimill® is a vertical grinding mill using gravity-induced technology. It is recognized as energy efficient grinding machine bringing substantial improvement in profitability of concentrators.   

Stirred Media Detritor (SMD), on the other hand, is a fluidized, vertical stirred mill designed for optimum grinding efficiency for fine and ultrafine grinding products.

Improved operational efficiency

Stirred mills have been proven to provide energy savings when compared with traditional grinding mills. The finer the product required, the more efficient stirred mills will be.

The attrition grinding action, vertical arrangement, and the finer media size distribution contribute to make stirred mills energy efficient grinding machines.

Vertimill® energy savings can range from 30% to greater than 50% compared with traditional mills, and the SMD energy savings can be far greater than 50% of ball mill energy in fine grinds.

Increased media savings

Increasing energy efficiency means reducing media consumption. Stirred mills use less energy with grinding that results in decreased need for grinding media.

The wasteful impact breakage of media-to-media or media-to-liner is eliminated, which ensures fewer fractures, and the media inside the mill can maintain its shape and usefulness longer.

Reduced carbon emissions

A savings in energy usage not only means big savings in operational cost, but also a reduction in carbon emissions.

Energy is also used to create grinding media, so a reduction in media consumption is a reduction in net carbon emissions.

Using energy efficient technology will not only decrease operating costs but ease the permitting process.

Flexible and safe to operate

Metso stirred mills are designed with operator safety in mind. For this reason, all moving parts are enclosed.
