Technical overview
Lime hydrate or hydrated lime is the reaction product of quicklime and water. Depending on the quicklime used – high calcium, usually containing CaO, plus 0.5 to 2.5 % MgO, magnesia or dolomitic quicklime, usually containing CaO plus 35.0 to 40.0% MgO – the hydrates are calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) or mixtures of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2).
The reaction between CaO and H2O takes place under atmospheric pressure, while the reaction between MgO and H2O requires a pressurized environment. Both reactions are exothermic.
