Greetings from Metso Outotec’s Ferrous & Heat Transfer business line!

As the year comes to an end and we gear up for the holidays season, we would like to share a quick recap of our exciting journey in 2022. It has been an amazing year – we furthered our steps towards the decarbonization of iron and steelmaking and continued to expand our product and technology portfolio. We also won several orders across the globe and most importantly, got a chance to meet many of you face-to-face.

Next steps to enable decarbonization of the industry

In 2022, we bolstered our decarbonization journey. We launched NextGen Pelletizing^TM,  a concept that will help the industry decarbonize, providing an 80 to 90% reduction in CO2 emissions. NextGen Pelletizing™ can be implemented fully or in parts to enable the transition to green steel.

Not only this, we also enabled a breakthrough in direct reduction technologies for iron ore fines. Metso Outotec supported Rio Tinto on the development of the BioIron^TM project for low-carbon iron making – a process which uses biomass instead of metallurgical coal as a reductant, and microwave energy to convert Pilbara iron ore to metallic iron.

Additionally, we also made an investment to convert our existing 700mm Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) pilot plant in Frankfurt, Germany, for direct reduction of fine ore with hydrogen, based on the proven Planet Positive Circored^TM technology.

Commitment to technology and customer success

Our team of experts continued to push the boundaries and develop innovative technologies and products that can help lower the emissions, cater to the evolving needs of the industry, as well as help our customers achieve their targets with ease. We would like to mention here:

• Ferroflame LowNOx^TM burners: Designed using the latest techniques and validated on full-scale operational plant, can reduce NOx emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional burner designs.
• Compact-sized Pellet Plant: Caters to the mid-size concentrate producer segment, who were looking for an alternative to the conventional 4m pellet plants.
• Committed to customer success: Our customer’s success means to us everything. Our Grate Kiln (GK) processing solutions helped one of our customers a significantly increased vanadium recovery and plant operability over traditional kiln processes. In addition, we also helped another customer successfully modernize its older grate kiln pellet plants with minimum downtime.

As a leader in metals processing, we will continue to drive the decarbonization through innovative process technologies and develop novel life cycle solutions to shape a better future for our customers and our planet.
