Our sustainability agenda
Our climate impacts
Our purpose is to “Enable sustainable modern life.” Climate change is one of the biggest global challenges, and a topic where Metso can play a significant role together with our customers. Therefore, a large part of our sustainability focus is on climate change. Our transition plan to net zero relies on having manufacturing operations that have low or zero carbon emissions and by gradually paving the way for products and solutions that make it possible for our customers to significantly reduce or even totally eliminate carbon in their operations.
Reaching global climate targets, supporting the 1.5-degree ambition, requires significant decrease in CO2 emissions by increasing the use of renewable energy sources and production efficiencies. Energy transition requires large investments into renewable energy generation, downstream power emissions, battery technologies and electric vehicles. Enabling energy transition demands a large increase in the supply of metals like nickel, copper, lithium, zinc, and manganese.
Metso offers sustainable technologies that support its customers’ energy transition plans. As a leading supplier of equipment and services and given how energy intensive rock comminution and processing is, our technology and innovation are crucial. Central to our sustainability efforts is our Metso Plus offering which features products that are more energy and water efficient than benchmark technologies. Metso’s technology strategy and R&D prioritize the development of products and services that can help customers achieve their own sustainability targets, e.g. carbon, energy or water efficiency. Metso Plus drives the R&D efforts through a commitment to add to this portfolio.
In 2025, Metso renewed its science-based targets (SBTs) and going forward continues to commit to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 100% by 2030 from the 2019 base year. Metso also commits to reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions from use of sold products by 51.6% per EUR value added by 2030 from the 2024 base year. Metso further commits that 40% of its customers by revenue, covering downstream transportation and distribution and use of sold products, will have science-based targets by 2030 and that 40% of its suppliers by spend, covering purchased goods and services and upstream transportation and distribution, will have science-based targets by 2030. In addition, Metso’s long term commitment for Scopes 1, 2 and 3 is to reach net zero by 2050. The Science Based Targets Initiative has validated these climate targets.

Metso Plus - our approach to sustainability
Metso’s most significant environmental impacts result from customer use of its products and processes. Our sustainable Metso Plus offering and innovations are important in managing these impacts.
This portfolio includes solutions that offer improvements in reducing energy and carbon intensity, water use, pollution, and embedded carbon compared to an industry baseline or benchmark technology. Offering the potential for increased recycling is also part of this portfolio. In addition, these products are required to perform at the same or preferably higher level than the industry benchmark in terms of their health and safety, pollution, and biodiversity impact. Electric solutions are also an important part of this portfolio; Metso Plus offering for the mining and metals industries allows customers to choose renewable energy sources.
Metso Plus services on the other hand can improve our customers’ processes with modernizations and upgrades, as well as by optimizing existing production processes. Our services help our customers make incremental improvements, progressively accumulating benefits over the lifetime of the equipment. In the long run, such cumulative gains can be very significant.
Our Metso Plus portfolio already includes over 100 products, and we aim to keep expanding and improving this offering to have a Metso Plus product for every part of our customers’ value chain. We aim to have 80% of our R&D spend on Metso Plus product and services offering development by 2030.
Our environmental footprint
Our footprint means the environmental impact we generate when producing the goods and services and delivering them to the customer. We aim to minimize any harmful impacts to the environment, people in our own operations, as well as logistics and supply chain. We actively collaborate with our suppliers and partners to create more sustainable value chain from raw materials to finished product.
We start with safety
Metso is committed to providing a healthy and safe working environment for all its employees, contractors and other partners. Health and safety at Metso is everyone’s responsibility – it is a requirement to understand and comply with all relevant health and safety regulations and instructions. To support this, we have a comprehensive safety agenda outlining continuous actions to improve the safety of all employees, partners, customers, contractors and other stakeholders.
Metso’s Health and Safety Directives set out the minimum safety requirements for the company and are used to develop local safety procedures, processes and work instructions. Metso’s Life-Saving Rules provide for all employees and contractors those actions that need to be taken to protect themselves and their colleagues from fatalities and severe injuries. These rules complement Metso’s Modus Operandi principles, which outline expected behaviors to work safely for everyone. Our people are encouraged to make risk observations and have regular safety conversations with colleagues.
