Dr. Steffen Haus, Metso Outotec (Senior R&D Engineer), will present “Results of Metso Outotec Calciner Optimizer operation at CBA Alumina Calcination Plants”. The text’s co-authors are Allan Borges, Metso Outotec (Senior Project Engineer), together with customer representatives Natalia Almeida, CBA (Process Engineer) and Anderson Duck, CBA (Process Consultant).

Dr. Alessio Scarsella, Metso Outotec (Director Light Metals) will speak about “Green Alumina a Technological Roadmap”.  Edgar Gasafi, Metso Outotec (Senior Product Manager), is the paper’s co-author.

The Metso Outotec Calciner Optimizer is a digital solution to actively assist and optimize the alumina calcination plants at Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio (CBA). Steffen’s presentation covers the architecture of the digital solution, the impact on CBA Calciner operation, and how detailed process understanding is digitally integrated into the daily process operation. He will also talk about how the close cooperation between CBA process experts and Metso Outotec digital and process experts formed the basis for a successful implementation. His presentation will proceed to detail the operational results, which confirmed significant energy savings when operating the plant with the Optimizer as well as reducing specific fuel gas consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Producers, technology suppliers and regulators are trying to common ground to meet EU emissions targets regarding niche aluminum production. Concurrently, individual producers are setting their own values amongst speculation about the formation of newly indexed metals.

The electrolytic reaction, anode consumption, and Bayer process, respectively, dominate the carbon dioxide makeup of aluminum production. Industry has made significant efforts to decarbonize the first two stages. but strong conceptual development is still needed to solve the last production phase. The presentation intends to explain this regarding Green Aluminum and the Bayer process from a technology supplier’s point of view.

There is considerable discussion within the industry when it comes to replacing the BF-BOF process with hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ore plus EAF in order to reduce the carbon footprint of steelmaking. One alternative to shaft furnaces is Metso Outotec’s Circored™ process. Fine ore as feed for fluidized bed reactors eliminates both the cost and energy intensive pelletizing of BF-BOF. Circored™ is the only direct reduction process using 100% hydrogen as reductant and has already proven its functionality in an industrial scale pilot plant. The presentation will also show that direct charging of hot DRI to a smelter would further increase energy efficiency, as well as covering the combination of Metso Outotec’s rectangular 6-in-line smelting furnace with a flash smelter body and Söderberg electrodes. This DRI smelting solution can replace small/medium sized blast furnaces and produce hot metal with the desired carbon content in existing steel plants that have BOF-converters. The large furnace volume enables processing of low-grade iron ore with high gangue content, thus allowing the use of blast furnace-grade feed for DRI production.
