Nordberg® C125™ – A jaw crusher with a rich history in Australia

As part of the 50-year celebration of Nordberg® C Series™ jaw crushers, the story of C125 stands as a powerful example of the design philosophy behind the C Series™ — built to perform, built to last, and trusted across generations.
Nordberg C125

Meet the Nordberg® C125™ s/n 1387, manufactured in February 1985. This crusher has a remarkable story that reflects the durability, adaptability, and long-term value of the C Series™ jaw crushers.

Originally purchased in Perth, Australia, the C125 was installed at a newly established gold mine in the Northern Territory, one of the most remote and sparsely populated regions in the country. Known for its vast deserts and extreme climate, the territory is home to only a few major population centers, including Darwin and Alice Springs, located near the iconic Uluru.

From gold mining to long-term production

In the early 1980s, a gold boom began in the small town of Pine Creek, located approximately 225 km southeast of Darwin. Rennison Goldfields established the Enterprise Gold Mine on the western side of the town and required a complete on-site crushing and screening solution. Supplied in 1985, the plant included the C125 jaw crusher, two 1560 Omnicone cone crushers, and a B16-56-2V grizzly feeder. Over the following decade, the operation produced between AUD 500,000 and 750,000 worth of gold per week, ultimately yielding more than a solid cubic meter of gold over its operating life.

A new chapter in aggregates production

When the mine closed in 1996, the entire crushing and screening plant was sold at auction. The new owner, Wagners, transported the plant more than 3,100 km south to Toowoomba, west of Brisbane, where it was installed at the newly established Wellcamp Downs Quarry.

Due to limited space, the initial plant layout was compact, but the C125 quickly proved its value. This installation marked Wagners’ first experience with Nordberg equipment, beginning a long-standing relationship between the company and the Nordberg brand in the region. During this period, the plant supplied material for major infrastructure projects, including the Oakey Air Base.

Back to the Northern Territory, and beyond

Between 2001 and 2003, the C125 was again relocated — this time returning to the Northern Territory as part of a contract crushing operation. Installed at a ballast project, the crusher processed 155,000 tonnes of concrete aggregates for the Alice Springs–Darwin railway, a 1,420 km infrastructure project across remote terrain.

Remarkably, the crusher was operating just 100 km from its original installation site. The project was completed five months ahead of schedule, despite harsh conditions and logistical challenges, requiring 5.5 million work-hours and multiple teams from across Australia.

Decades of service in demanding conditions

In 2006, the C125 returned once more to Wellcamp Downs Quarry, where a revised plant layout placed it 250 meters deeper into the pit. This change reduced haul truck movements by allowing primary crushed material to be conveyed directly to the surge pile.

The crusher continued processing basalt for aggregates and road base materials. Even when the quarry changed ownership in 2011, the C125 remained in full operation, supporting major infrastructure projects during a period of high demand.

By late 2012, after 27 years of continuous service in both mining and aggregates applications — it became clear that the crusher required major refurbishment. While the machine was technically rebuildable, operational requirements led to the decision to retire it. In early 2013, it was replaced with a new Nordberg® C125 jaw crusher.

A lasting legacy

Following its retirement, the C125 continued to add value. It was used as a donor unit, providing frame components that extended the life of another C125 crusher. That machine remained in operation until it was eventually replaced by a Nordberg® C130™ jaw crusher.

Across Australia, the C125 size has long been popular for mobile crushing applications, including use by contract crushing operators. Although the model has since been succeeded by the C130, the C125 remains remembered as a reliable, dependable, long-lasting machine.
