Driving sustainability through long-term partnerships

Metso Life Cycle Services (LCS) partnerships continue to evolve as a powerful vehicle to help customers meet their sustainability targets. With over 500 LCS contracts signed globally, sustainability is increasingly becoming a strategic cornerstone within many of them.

Together we can meet sustainability targets.

To date, 330 distinct sustainability initiatives have been developed alongside these contracts, spanning 20 countries and reflecting a growing commitment to environmental responsibility.

These initiatives are aimed at supporting more sustainable operations. Including efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels using solar panels and electric-powered equipment, as well as improving resource efficiency via recycling programs for rubber, metal, plastic, and oil. Additional actions such as optimizing transport routes, planting trees, and using biodegradable solvents are part of ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact. While many of these initiatives are still evolving, they represent steps toward integrating sustainability into everyday practices, with a focus on learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Case Study 1: Enhancing local value and community connection

LCS engineers initiated a tree planting program to foster a more balanced atmosphere and deepen local engagement. Faced with logistical challenges in sourcing flowers for remote customer sites, the team began planting flowers and eventually trees on-site.

To date, over 21,000 trees have been planted across aggregate customer sites with LCS contracts. While not yet verified by third-party agencies, the initiative is tracked through internal documentation and engineering inputs. Customers have expressed verbal appreciation, and the initiative has instilled a strong sense of ownership and pride among local teams.

The initiative has instilled a strong sense of ownership and pride among local teams and has been adopted by other LCS teams globally.

What started as a simple way to brighten remote sites has grown into something much more meaningful, planting trees has brought teams together and created a real sense of pride in the work we do.

Case Study 2: Photovoltaic systems

Metso has integrated photovoltaic systems into LCS contracts as part of its regional sustainability strategy. These systems aim to reduce Scope 3 emissions from customer operations and Scope 2 emissions associated with Metso’s electricity consumption by transitioning to low-carbon energy sources.

The initiative has delivered measurable environmental and economic benefits. It began as an operational enhancement and was later elevated to a strategic selling point, now featured as a standard component in new contract proposals. Customers have even highlighted this collaboration in their sustainability reports, showcasing Metso as a partner aligned with their climate goals.

Case Study 3: Material recycling across continents

Metso’s commitment to circularity is evident in its metallic and rubber recycling programs, which are now embedded in several long-term LCS contracts across multiple regions.

Example contract activities include:

  • Recycling/disposal of used Metso-supplied wear parts are included in the LCS scope, and the customer pays for them as part of the cost per ton fee of the LCS contract
  • Metso is responsible for disposal and recycling of used liners
  • The LCS scope includes planning and carrying out services, including recycling, as well as providing wear parts, tools, and equipment for maintenance activities

Outlook

Looking ahead, Metso remains committed to advancing sustainability across all aspects of operations.

“By leveraging innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement, Metso aims to develop solutions that support environmental stewardship and deliver long-term value to customers and communities globally,” says Martin Rios, Manager, Maintenance Engineering and Development at Metso.

Metso will continue to expand its circularity programs, invest in low-carbon technologies, and foster partnerships that drive meaningful change.
