Steadier feed, better throughput and fewer stops: Sora ja Kallio Heinonen runs its crushing process with Remote IC and Adaptive Feed Control

Keeping a crusher consistently loaded can have a major impact on productivity. By using Adaptive Feed Control and the Remote IC app, Sora ja Kallio Heinonen increased throughput by 9%, improved process stability and gained real-time visibility into crushing performance.

Old pit, new tools

The pit has been excavated since the beginning of the 1900s. Today the excess rock is crushed into aggregate and delivered to customers around southwestern Finland.

Running a site like this is about keeping material moving. Every stop in the feed is production that does not happen. That is where Metso digital services come in.

9% better throughput

At this site Sora ja Kallio operates with Lokotrack® LT400J jaw crusher, a LT300HP cone crusher and a LT330D cone crusher with integrated screen. While we visited, they tested the latest LT350C cone crusher model with a pre-screen as a secondary crusher.

The results with Adaptive Feed Control (AFC) were impressive. By keeping the feed steady, the LT330D crusher's power increased by 35 kW and overall throughput increased by 9%.

Adaptive Feed Control keeps the crusher loaded

Adaptive Feed Control (AFC) watches the crusher cavity and adjusts the feed to match. When the cavity reaches a set level, the feeder slows down by a set percentage instead of stopping. The system keeps making small adjustments in a predictive way, so the feeding process never stops completely. The operator sets the adjustment percentages, allowing the process to be tuned to the material and site setup.

When the cavity reaches a certain level, it automatically slows down the feeding process by a certain percentage, while making further adjustments whenever necessary in a predictive way, making sure that the feeding process never stops completely.

According to Metso measurements, Adaptive Feed Control increased throughput by 9% by keeping the feed more consistent and reducing unnecessary stops.

Full process control from the excavator cabin

Before, adjusting the process meant walking over to the crusher. That caused occasional stoppages and added workload, because the operator had to step down from the excavator every time.

With the Remote IC app, the process is controlled wirelessly from the cabin. Onboard cameras provide live footage of the crusher cavity together with real-time power output data on the same screen. The operator sees what is happening in the process and reacts without leaving the seat.

”Before, you had to physically go next to the crusher to make any adjustments, which resulted in occasional stoppages and added workload as the operator needed to step down from the excavator,” says Heinonen.

Staying in the cabin is also a safety benefit. Fewer trips on foot around a running plant means fewer situations where things can go wrong.

Alongside Remote IC and AFC, the team uses Metrics. It collects equipment and production data from the fleet and makes it available remotely, allowing performance to be monitored and decisions to be based on real data rather than guesswork.

Small changes, steady output

For Sora ja Kallio Heinonen, the digital services do not change what the site produces. They change how the process is run: steadier material flow, fewer unnecessary stops and less walking around the plant. The operator stays safely in the cabin and the crusher keeps working. Other team members on site can also follow the overall process, which helps them react quickly if an alarm appears.
