Suðurverk’s six-decade journey with Metso machinery

For nearly 60 years, Suðurverk has been at the heart of Iceland’s infrastructure development—from roads and ports to tunnels and dams. At the core of their success lies a commitment to quality, innovation, and trusted partnerships. One of those key partnerships is with the local dealer Vélafl ehf and Metso, whose machinery and service have helped Suðurverk stay ahead in a demanding aggregates industry.

“I founded this company in 1966,” says Dofri Eysteinsson, founder and high-level manager at Suðurverk. “I have worked there ever since.” Over the decades, Suðurverk has grown into a powerhouse in Icelandic construction, taking on major projects in road building, port development, and hydroelectric infrastructure groundworks.

“We’ve constructed large dam structures in the highlands for power plants and tunnels,” Dofri explains. “And this company has flourished over the years.”

During our visit, Suðurverk was contracting groundworks for a sea water tanks for a new fish processing facility near Reykjavik. The Lokotrack® LT400J mobile jaw crusher, LT350C cone crusher and ST3.8E mobile screen were all operated by electricity and crushing process controlled with Remote IC app.

It pays off to use the latest technology

Suðurverk’s success is closely tied to its use of cutting-edge machinery. “The machinery from Metso has always performed well,” Dofri notes. “And we are working with a good dealer. We've had great experiences working with them.”

One of the key aspects has been the shift to diesel-electric machines, especially for clients like Landsvirkjun, Iceland’s national power company. “They require our machines to run on electricity. It pays off to stay on top of the latest technology,” Dofri says.

Reliability that builds trust

Metso’s machines have proven their worth time and again. “I’ve always found it easy to resell them,” Dofri shares. “There’s always been plenty of demand for this brand, which is very good.”

Suðurverk’s reputation for reliability is also reflected in their project delivery. “I don’t remember us getting any day-fines for our projects,” Dofri says. “We’ve always been able to finish them in time, and our customers are very satisfied with us.”

A partnership built on trust

“Our partnership with Suðurverk dates back to the day we started working with Metso. Actually, we had been working with Dofri Eysteinsson and Suðurverk more or less since the company was started,” explains Hjalmar Helgason, owner of Vélafl efh, Metso distributor in Iceland.

“One of the upsides of working with Suðurverk is the mutual trust that we have. We can guarantee dedication and experience to navigate difficult jobs." Delivering machines to Suðurverk is always a confident move. "It’s always a good feeling to deliver good machines to them because we know this will be put to good use,” Hjalmar adds.

Service that supports success

“Vélafl has provided us excellent service,” Dofri says. “They are always prepared to deal with any problem or request I might have. It’s been very good to work with them.”

That level of support has made a lasting impact. “They provided everything we needed to run the machines. So it’s been going very well—which is the reason why I keep buying these machines,” summarizes Dofri.
