Performance and serviceability are the primary reasons that 120 85 LLC, a Colorado company, chose the Lokotrack LT1213S mobile impactor plant with screen over a competitor’s machine for their recycling application. For the past 3½ years, 120 85 LLC has crushed asphalt and concrete, operating out of the Henderson Pit in Henderson, Colorado. “We recycle asphalt to a ¾ inch minus finished product for various projects including parking lots, driveways, road applications, anything like that,“ says Adam Schultejann of 120 85 LLC. Adam, along with his father, Dave Schultejann, owns 120 85 LLC and the two run day-to-day operations at the pit.
Finding a cost-effective, sustainable way to recycle asphalt and concrete while also reclaiming land formerly used for gravel mining provided a business opportunity for the Schultejanns. Mining activity at the Henderson Pit ended in 2007, and the 39-acre property sat vacant and mostly inactive since that time. Initially, the site’s reclamation plan called for converting the pit into a water reservoir. However, that plan was never implemented due to economic factors and other considerations. Several years ago, the Schultejanns stepped in with a reclamation plan that called for filling the pit with clean, non-hazardous material, bringing in up to 1 million cubic yards of fill material to return the property to its original grade. The pit’s location (northeast of the metropolitan Denver area) is convenient for area contractors bringing in clean construction and demolition (C&D) material for processing on site.
The Schultejanns are currently using a Lokotrack LT1213S to crush and screen primarily asphalt, and an LT1415 impactor plant to crush concrete, loading both crushers with a John Deere 1350 excavator. The Lokotracks are provided by Inter-Mountain Construction Equipment of Fort Lupton, Colorado, Metso’s crushing and screening distributor in the state of Colorado and southeastern Wyoming*. Adam Schultejann said he’s been pleased with the performance of the LT1213S, as well as its ease of maintenance. “The LT1213S has been great, it rarely has any problems, and is easy to work on,” he said.
Comparing crushers
Prior to leasing the LT1213S, the Schultejanns first tested another manufacturer’s mobile impactor plant with screen for about four months. However, that unit did not meet performance expectations. “We’ve had a good experience with the Metso equipment, and the LT1213S runs fine,” noted Schultejann, adding that “the LT1213S really doesn’t give us any of the issues we had with the other unit at all.” Schultejann has been operating the LT1213S for several months, and has achieved production rates as high as 300 tph.
In addition to the productivity of the LT1213S, Adam Schultejann has been impressed with the efficiency of the combination impactor with screen. “In the past, we’ve had just a regular LT1213 track-mounted machine, and we’ve run an ST3.8 screen with it,” he said. “This is a much more efficient set up, with less labor on the machine, fewer people needed to run the machine, and more fuel efficient. Compared to operating two machines, it’s been half the fuel, at least, if not better.”
