Metso Research and Testing: Collaborative testing at the Dewatering Technology Center in Finland

At Metso's Research and Testing facilities around the globe, we pride ourselves on our collaborative approach to research and testing. In this article series, we introduce our centers and deep dive into latest projects. First, let’s head to our Dewatering Technology Center in Lappeenranta, Finland.

Customer involvement in testing is important to us at Metso. We view this as a crucial partnership and we encourage our customers to share their knowledge, stay involved, and learn through testing in several ways. Customers can be present and attend on-site tests, witness tests at our Dewatering Technology Center and participate in online discussion for more complex cases. Throughout the testing phase, our process engineers maintain continuous communication with customers to ensure a collaborative and informative experience.

One of the most interesting recent projects at the Dewatering Technology Center (DTC) in Finland involved a customer who visited our center for a couple of weeks. The project included thickening and filtration tests using various filter technologies. However, this wasn't just routine testing, but also ambitious development work. The customer had new polymers they wanted to test with different dosages and mixes. Initially, they had a preferred filter technology, but through collaborative testing and comparison, we identified a different filter technology that better suited their needs.

A few years ago, we conducted Larox® PF filter pilot testing at another customer's site. The moment they saw the first filter cake, they were convinced of the filter's effectiveness. The customer ended up renting the pilot unit until their own industrial-sized equipment was ready. Despite the pilot's smaller production scale, the customer valued the quality of the products it produced, leading to a successful order.

Overcoming unique testing challenges

Testing isn't always without challenges. Some common issues can include for instance small sample amounts that can affect optimization of the filtration cycle, and hazardous samples which require extra precautions. Metso tackles unique testing challenges through open communication with the customers and our sales team.

What makes Metso Research & Testing capabilities unique?

Our filtration testing capabilities stand out because we can test all the filtration technologies we offer. We also have various sizes of test filters to match customer needs and sample amounts, and our knowledgeable expert teams across all test labs ensure high-quality results.

Additionally, we do ambitious process development at the Metso Research Center in Pori, Finland, where we can integrate equipment of any size into the dewatering process, depending on the sample requirements. In our York facility, we do comprehensive testing and we can test from crushing to filtering for the concentrator process.

Looking ahead, we have several exciting developments in the pipeline. Metso is building a new pilot unit, a Tube press pilot that is built into the sea freight container. The pilot will be ready for testing in early 2025. We are also developing a mini LSF unit that requires only 1 m³ of feed, compared to the current 20 m³. We also do continuous product development at Metso research and testing centers and the ongoing projects at DTC include both new innovations and revisiting existing technologies.

These advancements highlight our commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in dewatering technology. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible.
