Veidekke Industri replaced the old aggregates plant with portable NW Rapid™ crushing and screening equipment to boost production and simplify relocations

Norwegian aggregates and asphalt producer Veidekke Industri faced a tricky problem. The company sought to replace an older stationary aggregates production plant that had served well but slowly deteriorated over the decades. After a thorough evaluation, Veidekke Industri decided to invest in portable NW Rapid™ equipment.

A key player in construction and civil engineering

Veidekke Group is a Scandinavian construction, civil engineering, and property development company headquartered in Oslo, Norway. One of the company’s subsidiaries, Veidekke Industri AS, focuses on producing and selling aggregates, asphalt production, as well as road maintenance projects.

To ensure a sufficient supply of raw material, Veidekke Industri has around 30 quarries and gravel pits in Norway. One of these sites is Aasmund Berg Pukkverk in Fokserød, Sandefjord municipality, about 120 km southwest of the capital Oslo.

Old site in need of an upgrade

Aasmund Berg Pukkverk is a long-running site that has seen and experienced a lot in over 60 years in harsh, sometimes extreme, weather conditions ranging from the short dry and warm seasons to regular rain, gusty winds, not to mention snow and frost during the winter months.

Despite numerous re-constructions, the old plant had started to fall behind. The modifications and adjustments over the years had resulted in the production process being slightly off-balance and the daily run-time of the plant was less than expected.

Aware of the problems, the Aasmund Berg Pukkverk site managers started looking into ways of modernizing the plant. The aim was to increase the plant’s capacity and enable monitoring production volumes more accurately than in the past.

More capacity, flexibility, and a possibility to relocate

Veidekke Industri contacted Metso Outotec to explore ways of solving the current problems at the Aasmund Berg Pukkverk.

“Our challenge was that the equipment was outdated. The site, however, did not have enough space for building a new stationary plant,” explains Roger Pedersen, Production Manager, Veidekke Industri.

Through mutual discussions and on-site inspections, it became clear that whatever the solution would be, it should allow Aasmund Berg Pukkverk to produce multiple end products sold to construction companies, the asphalt industry, and other end-users.

Furthermore, the production volumes of different grain sizes should be adjustable according to current demand, and the production capacity of the most popular end products ought to be increased considerably.

Veidekke Industri also preferred that the entire plant could be run on electricity and relocated comfortably if necessary.

Portable crushing and screening equipment do the trick

After detailed analysis, Metso Outotec experts proposed to Veidekke Industri new NW Rapid™ portable crushing and screening equipment, which would optimize the shape of the end products and increase the capacity of the most valuable sizes.

“We will change the location of the plant in three years. Portable equipment is easier and cheaper to take down and transport,” Pedersen says.

At Veidekke Industri’s new plant the primary crushing and screening are done with Jonsson & Söner mobile crusher and a screen, which feed the material to the three wheel-mounted units: NW300GP™ Rapid with a secondary crusher, NW2060S™ Rapid with a 4-deck screen, and NW330GPS™ Rapid with a 4-deck screen and an integrated tertiary crusher.

According to the calculations, the new four-stage plant is supposed to increase the potential capacity up to 600,000 tonnes annually, an improvement of 20% compared to the maximum capacity of the old plant.

Veidekke Industri’s new crushing and screening plant is also powered by electricity.

“The plant can be connected to the power grid, which was important to the customer. It is also important to us. Metso Outotec tends to talk about footprint and handprint. The footprint is how we operate ourselves and manufacture the equipment environmentally friendly. The handprint is what we provide to the customer to help them to operate in a more environmentally friendly manner”, explains Raymond Andreassen, Project Manager, Metso Outotec.

Good teamwork brought the desired result

All involved in the project have been satisfied with the smooth cooperation and the performance of the new plant.

“The collaboration with Metso Outotec has been great from day one. We had some challenges, but we solved them together,” Roger Pedersen notes.

According to Lars Jørgen Kjærås, Director, Aggregates Norway, Metso Outotec, much focus was put on health and safety during the project.

“The collaboration has been very good from the planning phase and delivery to assembly, start-up, and training. We have received good feedback on how the plant is operating, its capacity, and so on, Kjærås, says.
