With more than 50 commercial-scale references, Metso’s Ausmelt top submerged lance (TSL) furnace provides a robust solution for the processing of copper, nickel, lead, tin, zinc and precious metal bearing feedstocks. Configuration of the furnace can be adapted depending on the specific process application, with designs ranging from fully insulated - comprising a refractory-lined, steel shell through to intensely cooled – utilizing Metso’s extensive range of water-cooled copper elements. Tailored configurations suited to match specific requirements in different regions of the furnace aid in maximizing campaign life.
Handling of molten slag and matte/metal is achieved with water-cooled, copper taphole blocks lined with consumable, graphite inserts. Tapholes are often serviced by automated drill and mud-gun units. In select process applications, continuous tapping of molten products via an underflow weir may be possible, providing a range of safety, operational and environmental benefits.
The Ausmelt TSL furnace incorporates a number of large hatches to facilitate access by personnel, machinery and materials, enabling refractory demolition, removal and installation (relining) to be completed in the shortest possible timeframe.
The furnace roof incorporates feed, lance, burner and sampling ports, each with dedicated sealing mechanisms and hygiene hooding. Furnace operation under negative pressure ensures fugitive gas and dust emissions are minimized.
A range of solutions may be employed to provide condition monitoring of the Ausmelt TSL furnace, including Metso’s furnace lining monitoring system (FLMS) and sentinel headers to support maintenance planning and improve operating availability.
The Ausmelt TSL furnace, together with the Ausmelt TSL lance and lance handling system, standby burner and process control system form the core technology package implemented at each customer site.
