Preheating Kiln
Remove water and other volatile components from the smelting furnace charge material with Metso's Outotec Preheating Kiln.

Preheating stabilizes conditions in the smelting furnace, decreasing specific energy consumption.

  • Uses CO gas from the electric furnace as fuel
  • Preheats up to 600ºC, with every 100ºC saving 70 kWh per metric ton of metal in smelting
  • Increases smelting furnace capacity by up to 20%
  • Results in more stable smelting furnace operation while minimizing coke and electrode paste consumption
  • Offers a gas-tight structure and clean working environment
Preheating Kiln

Preheating Kiln

Metso's Outotec Preheating Kiln is a refractory-lined, shaft-type kiln where smelting charge materials are preheated to 600°C by burning cleaned carbon monoxide (CO) gas from the closed smelting furnace. Every 100°C increase in preheating saves approximately 70 kWh of power consumption per ton of metal in smelting. Preheating can increase furnace capacity by up to 20%, and it minimizes coke and electrode paste consumption. Furthermore, the gas-phase pressure of the furnace is also easier to control when using a dry, preheated charge.
