Metso Outotec participates in Copper 2022

Metso Outotec was a part of Copper 2022, held in Santiago, Chile on November 13-17, 2022. The event brought together copper industry experts from all over the world to exchange ideas, scientific innovations and development.

At the event, Metso Outotec had quite a busy booth. This proved to be a great way to meet and greet people after a long time of silence with on-site events. We had a very good impression from the customer’s that the industry is doing well, and there was a positive vibe amongst the participants.

However, the reality is that our expertise is needed - in many ways. Many have lost their know-how and capabilities to operate smelters on an appropriate level. It is also obvious that the industry is changing and new developments are needed for more sustainable solutions.

With a large portfolio of different products in the digital field and a proven record of applications, the process simulation and process optimizers are examples of the continuous development Metso Outotec is making in order to improve today’s sustainable technologies to the next level of excellence. Most of our presentations at Copper 2022 were based on these tools.

Mari Lindgren and Peter Björklund presented on how CO2 emissions are reduced by our advanced process control system, Process Advisor. In the second presentation, they highlighted the latest developments in furnace feed system, as well as new digital products and their effect on the improved process performance. Our valuable customer co-operation was highlighted and our customer’s representative, José A. Calderón from Atlantic Copper, was also present. Process simulation and automatic control systems have a long history in Metso Outotec. Integrating the individual tools into the next generation ecosystem will be the future challenge in the industry. The seamless integration and implementation of new features into new and existing plant operations are a key factor for success.

Metso Outotec’s Director of Sales development, Lauri Pesonen, also presented. His presentation focused on comparing different copper smelting options available in the market and estimating via HSC-SIM simulation which technology offers the best chances for profit maximization under different scenarios. At the conference, it seemed that digitalization finally reached everybody, and all of the solutions discussed are more considered a necessity rather than an add on.
Marcus Runkel - Senior Product Manager, Fluid Bed Technology, Metso Outotec

In his presentation, Runkel brought up both the active operational optimization - based on model-based controllers as well as the integration of process simulation in the economic production planning - with the example of a roasting process. Read more on Metso Outotec Roaster Optimizer here.

E-scrap was definitely one topic which appeared much more than in previous years. Also, non-surprisingly, green transition and how much copper we are going to need was highlighted frequently.

Presenter: Stephen Hughes - Sales Manager, TSL Smelting, Australia

One of our 5 presentators, Stephen Hughes - Sales Manager, TSL Smelting, Australia focused his presentation around e-scrap and its technical and commercial processing challenges and how these may be addressed with Metso Outotec suite of eScrap technologies.

Metso Outotec hosted its own cocktail reception at the aviation club, Club de Planeadores de Vitacura, during Copper 2022. See images below.

The cocktail reception brought everybody together. We received feedback that our event was one of the best organized at the whole of Copper ‘22. No wonder the guests were still enjoying their time after the closing time!
