A strong start to career in Legal and Compliance – Bao’s journey at Metso

Meet Bao Tran, Legal and Compliance trainee at Metso. Bao started his traineeship in early 2025 and has had the chance to work on various interesting projects. Read Bao’s story below.

Hi! I’m Bao, and I work as a Legal & Compliance trainee at Metso. I’m originally from Vietnam and have lived in Finland for the past four years. I have a background in international and European law, with master’s degree from universities in Ireland and the Netherlands. I’m currently studying for a second master’s in European and Nordic studies at the University of Helsinki.

Before joining Metso, I had done a few internships, but none were directly in the legal field. I wanted to find a role where I could really apply what I had studied, ideally in a global company where I could grow. The application process with Metso was straightforward and efficient, with clear communication and quick feedback after each stage.

Since starting my traineeship at Metso, I’ve been encouraged to keep a curious mind and a strong legal compass. My work is versatile, daily tasks consisting of compliance checks, background research on ESG and human rights, and supporting our Code of Conduct training project.

Expect the unexpected

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned during my time at Metso is how to work in a fast-paced environment, and to always expect the unexpected. It keeps things interesting and means no two days are ever the same.

Alongside the day-to-day tasks, I’ve had the chance to work on bigger initiatives like a global risk mapping project focused on health, safety, and human rights. I’ve also helped update our Know your customer Boulevard page and publish internal compliance news, which has reached a wide audience across the company.

What stands out most for me is the supportive culture and dynamics in the team I work with. From day one, my team has been welcoming and encouraging.

A team that supports and challenges me

What stands out most for me is the supportive culture and dynamics in the team I work with. From day one, my team has been welcoming and encouraging. My “buddy”, a colleague that supports with onboarding, has helped me navigate the organization, and the team has been open to my ideas, especially around human rights initiatives.

The level of trust and inclusion I’ve experienced at Metso has been beyond what I expected. It’s empowering to know that I can speak up, bring forward new ideas, and be heard.

Looking ahead

Originally planned for a six-month role, my traineeship has been extended to a full year. This is something I consider to be one of my biggest achievements so far. It’s given me more time to grow professionally, sharpen my legal thinking, and apply what I’ve learned in school to real business situations. Over the next months, I’m excited to take on new projects, expand my network, and continue building the skills that will shape my career.

Advice for future trainees

If you’re considering applying to Metso — or have already started your traineeship — here’s the advice that’s helped me the most: be curious, proactive, and present.

Keep a curious mind by asking questions and being genuinely interested in how things work, even beyond your own role. Remember to stay proactive, whether that’s volunteering for a new project or simply checking in with your team to see how you can support. And being present, especially if you’re working on-site, helps you build relationships and learn from the people around you.

These three things have helped me find my place in Metso. They’ve also helped me grow more confident and connected with my work.
